Tails of Hawai'i FAQ Page

My pet has never stayed overnight before. Do you have any tips?

The more familiar your pet is with our facility, the better they will do. Plan on bringing your pet a few times for doggie daycare or day lodging so they can get to know the staff. The better they know us, the better they do. The pets that normally do the best are the regular daycare dogs that come 1-2 times a week.  You can always bring your pet's small blanket that will remind them of home.  Feel free to call and check in on your pooch anytime during their stay.

What vaccines are necessary?

All pets must have veterinary proof of vaccination administration.

Dogs need the following:
DA2PPHL(Distemper, Adeno virus, Hepatitis, Parvo, Para-influenza, Leptospirosis )- current on veterinary certificate Bordetella(Canine Cough)- current within the last 6months. Bordetella is usually valid for 1year, however due to different products potency range we recommend a 6month boost. Your veterinarian understands your pets health best should he decline a booster we understand! We will ask you to sign a waiver of understanding that eligibility for Healthy Tails Warranty (HTW) will be limited. All vaccines must be administered 10 days before arrival to be eligible for HTW

Cats:
FVRCP and Feline Leukemia- current on veterinary records Flea & Tick Prevention- Veterinary grade residual flea and tick prevention must be on board with in the last month. TOH recommends avoiding Frontline as we have experienced multiple reactions to the product.

Whats the check in procedure and times of pick up and drop off?

Our busiest times are between 6-8 am and 3- 5:30 pm. If you are checking in or out during these times please give yourself extra time. Checking in usually takes about 10 -15min to process your pets lodging. Please have all medication labeled and meals pre-bagged per meal, add two extra bags incase you are delayed. We feed our guests two times a day if you normally feed only once a day please split the meal into two feedings. We don’t want any pups feeling left out when their friends are eating. We ask that all lodging dogs be checked in between 7:30 and 2:00pm at Waipio please have your dog arrive by 1:30. Collecting your pet at the end of his stay is usually quick, marking your pets belongings with his name helps a lot. We don’t have control of how busy our lobby gets so please bear with the staff if there is a wait. Pet pick up time is between 8:30 am and 6pm (5:30 on Sundays)

What things do I need to bring for my pet's stay?

Pet beds are available for each guest. You may bring a small blanket or flat bedding as long as it’s washable. Three toy limit please. For safety, no rope toys are allowed. Collars/leads aren’t necessary unless someone else is picking up your pet. Please make sure all belongings are labeled appropriately with your pets name prior to check in. We encourage you to bring your pet’s regular diet to help alleviate an upset tummy. Please bring your pet’s food and/or treats labeled with their name in zip-lock baggies portioned out for each meal. Please no Tupperware or large dog food bags. (Exceptions with long term lodging guests).

Can you give my pet their medications?

Sure, please bring it in the original packaging. If prescription, please have in labeled bottle with the directions from the veterinarian. TOH will administer up to three medications during feeding times additional doses may be subject to a $2.50 charge per day per medication.

Lobby etiquette

Lets face it waiting sucks! Our lobby does get rather busy at times and wait times are inevitable. We appreciate patience and understanding, our first job is to keep all pets safe and too many pets in a confined area, who are excited to see their families can get hairy.(No pun intended!) Also our staff is well versed in each pets personality, you may arrive first to pick up your pet and another pet gets brought up before yours. The reason may be that we are trying to minimize the risk of a pet reacting to another or your dog may have jumped in the pool right before you came and we need to dry her off.

What is a Healthy Tails Warranty (HTW)?

This is a program that will cover up to $500 of veterinary expenses if your pet should get sick or have an injury during their lodging stay. The cost is built in to your pets stay.

*Exceptions to this coverage are 1) pre-existing health conditions; 2) injury, illness or death resulting from incidents occurring before arrival; 3) injuries sustained from another family pet while boarding or playing together; and 4) gastric dilatation-volvulus (Bloat) 5) Vaccinations must be administered at least 10 days prior to arrival. 6) Pets that have not received Bordetella at least 10 days prior to arrival and show signs of upper respiratory infection will not be covered.

What is the payment and cancellation policy?

Payment is easy if you place a credit card on your profile we will automatically charge you upon picking up your pet. If you prefer not to place a card on file give yourself a little extra time at check in to process your charges. Cancellations or changes on pets visit will require a 72 hour (7 days peak season) notice. We do require a nominal deposit for each booking it helps keep order and predictability in our schedule. Deposits are $40 or 10% of the total of nights charged. Deposits paid on timely cancellations will be retained as credit all others will be forfeited.
